The Detox Myth
New year is often a time to reflect on your goals and resolutions for the year ahead. One topic that is sure to come up in the kitchen at work, the gym and most post festive social gatherings, is how you’ve over indulged over the Festive Season, along with diets, juice cleanses and general detox banter.
Well, it’s time for a detox paradigm shift.
“…detoxing — the idea that you can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean and raring to go — is a scam. It’s a pseudo-medical concept designed to sell you things.”
Your body is a biological machine and your internal organs are its means of energy production and waste removal. As you go about your daily tasks, your body is constantly converting the food you eat into energy for use and, as with any means of production, there are waste products. Where does the waste from the myriad chemical reactions in your body go? To your organs that are tasked with detoxification and excretion: your liver and kidneys.
Products that claim to detox your body are often marketed as the sure-fire cure-all. This is a basic mistruth, these products merely assist your body’s natural detoxification process and do not act alone as your saviour from bad habits which have left your organs overburdened.
This year, optimise your body’s detoxification process by avoiding processed fats, foods with high sugar content, alcohol, fizzy drinks and fast & snack foods. Additionally, avoid detox snake oil and opt for a healthy balanced diet with plenty water and exercise that serve to support your liver and kidney function.
